Executive Board of Directors

Richard Canipe - President

Richard has served in the role of town manager for almost two decades and has been a part of Spruce Pine Main Street’s organization since it’s inception in 1991. When asked why he has continued to serve for so long, Richard’s reply was, “Spruce Pine Main Street is a great organization and it is vital to the survival of our downtown. This is my hometown and I’m interested in what happens here.” Richard continues to volunteer because he feels that it is important that he continues to be active in downtown as an individual and as a town employee.

Betsy Biega - Secretary

Betsy moved to Spruce Pine permanently in 2013. She works part-time at Lakeview Mercantile and enjoys helping in the community through Spruce Pine Main Street, Mitchell Giving Gardens, and is active in the Episcopal Church. She began her journey with the Spruce Pine Main Street board as a volunteer coordinator around seven years ago. When she is not working with Spruce Pine Main Street she enjoys being a part of two other boards.

David Niven - Vice President

As co-owner of DT’s Blue Ridge Java and Niven Properties, LLC, David believes that everyone should volunteer to better their community. As a volunteer who has served 15 years with the Spruce Pine Main Street Organization, he definitely leads by example. He enjoys the small town atmosphere and the natural beauty that abounds here. When asked why he liked being a part of Spruce Pine Main Street, he had this to say: “Main Street’s job is to enhance Spruce Pine and I enjoy that because it has a main purpose - It’s always about having a purpose.”

Eron Thiele - Treasurer

Eron Thiele joined the MAY Coalition as the Executive Director in February of 2018.  Before joining the MAY Coalition, Eron coordinated the Mayland Community College Earth to Sky Park, and was a practicing entrepreneur and business owner.  He graduated Davidson College with double majors in Political Science and Economics, and obtained his MBA from East Carolina University.  He is highly active in non-profits and service organizations in the Mitchell, Avery, and Yancey County NC area.
